Give what's in your heart.
There are several notable organizations in Central Illinois that do honorable work. An organization that I have been committed to since I turned 16-years-old is the Central Illinois Community Blood Center. I love their motto: "Give what's in your heart."
According to the CICBC site, nearly 4.5 million are saved by blood transfusions annually, which is a staggering number! CICBC provides plasma and blood to local hospitals and relies on volunteers to supply the blood needed for both emergency incidents and planned surgeries.
Different organizations around Central Illinois sponsor blood drives where CICBC comes to you with the needed gear and people are encouraged to donate. How difficult would it be to volunteer then? You wouldn't even have to leave work!
Unsure about donating? When I donate blood, it only takes maximum 20 minutes once my iron has been tested. You are allowed to donate every 8 weeks, and on occasion can win a giftcard from a local business and get a free t-shirt!
While I despise needles, I remember that I could be helping someone live by taking 30 minutes out of my day to donate blood. As a person with AB+ blood, I am in the minority (only 2.5% of people born in the United States are AB+)...if I was in dire need of blood, I would hope that some generous soul from our local blood bank would be able to help me.
If you are interested in donating blood or plasma, you can call ahead to make an appointment or walk-in! Contact information below. Hope you are able to check out the site and join Central Illinois is donating!
